ZZ plants (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) are popular for their attractive appearance and remarkable resilience, making them an excellent choice for both houseplant novices and enthusiasts. These plants are known for their ability to thrive in low-light conditions and their minimal water requirements, making them perfect for indoor environments. ZZ plants have shiny, dark green leaves that grow on stems which can store water, aiding their drought tolerance
Where do I come from?
I am native to Eastern Africa.
Light
ZZ plants are adaptable and can thrive in a wide range of light conditions, from low to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
Watering
Water sparingly, allowing the soil to become dry between waterings. Over-watering is a common mistake. Typically, watering every 2-3 weeks is sufficient, but adjust based on the humidity and light conditions of your space.
Soil
Use a well-draining potting mix to prevent water from accumulating around the roots, which can lead to rot.
Temperature and Humidity
ZZ plants prefer temperatures between 15°C - 24°C and do well in average room humidity. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Fertilizing
Feed your ZZ plant every 6-8 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). There's no need to fertilize in the fall and winter.
Potting and Repotting
ZZ plants grow slowly and don’t need frequent repotting. Consider repotting every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound in its current pot. When repotting, choose a pot only one size larger than the current one to avoid over-watering issues.
Pest and Diseases
These plants are relatively resistant to pests and diseases. However, watch out for common issues like mealybugs or spider mites. Over-watering can lead to root rot, so ensure the pot has good drainage.
Am I Pet Friendly?
Keep in mind that ZZ plants are toxic to pets and humans if ingested, so place them out of reach of children and animals.
What size am I?
I come in a 12cm pot.
