Monstera Deliciosa, also known as the Swiss cheese plant or split-leaf philodendron, is a popular tropical houseplant recognized for its large, glossy green leaves with characteristic splits and holes. Native to Central America, it adds a lush, jungle-like feel to indoor spaces and can grow quite large under the right conditions.
Where do I come from?
Monsteras are native to Central and South America.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate low light, but growth will be slower, and leaves may not develop splits.
Water
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging; avoid letting the plant sit in water.
Humidity
Thrives in high humidity but can adapt to average indoor humidity levels. Increase humidity by misting the plant regularly or using a humidifier.
Temperature
Ideal temperature range is 18-29°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C.
Soil
Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix. A mix of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark works well.
Fertiliser
Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in the fall and winter.
Pruning
Prune to control size and shape, removing any dead or damaged leaves. Use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears.
Support
Provide a moss pole or trellis for the plant to climb as it grows.
