Calathea Sanderiana, also known as Goeppertia ornata or Pinstripe Calathea, is a stunning tropical plant known for its dark green, glossy leaves adorned with delicate, pale pink stripes. The leaves are oval-shaped with a rich purple hue on their undersides, creating a striking contrast.

Native to the tropical rainforests of South America, this plant is admired for its dramatic foliage, making it a popular choice among indoor plant enthusiasts. Though it requires a bit more attention to care than some other houseplants, its unique appearance makes it well worth the effort.

Calathea Sanderiana is a beautiful, decorative houseplant that adds an elegant touch to indoor spaces with its striking, pinstriped leaves. While it does require attention to humidity and watering, its tropical charm makes it a rewarding plant for those willing to provide a bit of extra care.

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its vivid leaf patterns.

Can tolerate lower light but may grow more slowly and lose some of its pink striping.

Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and cause the colours to fade.

Water

Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.

Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry, ensuring thorough watering each time.

Use filtered or distilled water, as Calatheas are sensitive to chlorine and fluoride in tap water, which can cause browning on the leaf edges.

Humidity

Thrives in high humidity levels (60-70%).

Regular misting, using a humidifier, or placing the plant on a tray with water and pebbles can help maintain moisture.

Low humidity can cause leaves to curl or develop brown edges, so avoid placing near heaters or air conditioners.

Temperature

Ideal temperature range: 18-27°C.

Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect from cold drafts.

Keep away from sudden temperature changes, such as near doors or windows during winter.

Soil

Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix that retains moisture without becoming soggy.

A mix of peat, perlite, and pine bark or coco coir works well for maintaining the right balance of moisture and aeration.

Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from pooling at the roots.

Fertilisation

Feed with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).

Reduce fertilisation during the fall and winter months when growth slows down.

Avoid over-fertilising, as it can cause leaf tip burn.

Repotting

Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound.

Choose a pot that is 1-2 inches larger than the current one with good drainage.

Repotting is best done in spring, allowing the plant to adjust during its active growth period.

Pruning

Prune to remove any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to maintain the plant’s appearance.

Regular trimming helps encourage new growth and keeps the plant looking tidy.

Use clean, sharp scissors to prevent the spread of disease.

Propagation

Best propagated through division during repotting.

Gently separate the plant into smaller sections, ensuring each has roots and a few healthy leaves.

Plant the divisions into fresh, well-draining soil and maintain high humidity while the new plants establish.
